Discussion:
Free Newsserver?

I normally use the news server provided by my ISP, but when I'm
away from home using my laptop without my regular internet
connection, I can't access that server. So I'm looking for a
second free news server that I can use while on the road.

The only ones I've been able to find either don't carry alt
newsgroups or else let me read messages but not post.

Anyone have a recommendation that will let me post and access alt
groups?

I don't need any binary groups, by the way.

There are a few free text-only read/post servers; try reading the
group alt.free.newsservers. Some examples: news.readfreenews.net,
news.sunsite.dk, news.shared-secrets.com, news.aioe.org.

Aioe does not require registration to read or post, but has
restrictive posting policies and isn't the most robust.
http://news.aioe.org/en/index.php

Readfreenews can be used to read without registration, but you
need to register to post -- http://www.readfreenews.net/
There's a link there to the registration page.

SunSite and Shared-Secrets you need to register for reading and
posting. SunSite (change of name) -- http://dotsrc.org/usenet/

Shared-Secrets -- http://www.shared-secrets.com/
It's not obvious from the latter that they're still offering
free accounts, so you'll need to contact them.

Readfreenews worked well for me. Thanks again.

Thanks, but I was looking for a news server I could access with a
newsreader, not a web interface. For a web interface, I'd just
use Googlegroups.

But thanks to another poster, I've found what I needed and I'm
all set now.
