o/t Query about Newsgroup Headers

Hello

This is o/t so please excuse me if I am intruding....

I have a query, more for curiosity than anything. I just wondered -
I have seen people posting to newsgroups using the same newsgroup server
(news.individual.net) as me, yet their headers only contain the following
info:

Path:
From:
Newsgroups:
Subject:
Date:
Organization:
Lines:
Message-ID:
Xref:

Whereas my posts also contain the following headers:

NNTP-Posting-Host:
X-Trace:
X-Priority:
X-MSMail-Priority:
X-Newsreader:
X-MimeOLE:

Can anyone explain why this is, how this this done and what is the best way
to do this (preferably for free) ? Thanks in advance!

Cheers

Simple - your ISP adds many of the x-headers in an attempt to make spammers
more traceable. Unfortunately, these can be forged to implicate the
innocent - at least on a superficial level.

In the email programs I write, the email header (and if I ever write a
newsreader) contains the mac address, user login name and PC name too :)

How what is done? Whatever it is, why do you want to do it? Some
headers are added by your client, and some by your news service
provider.

You seem to have answered my question with another question which you then
answered. lol I wanted to know why some peoples headers contain much less
info than mine. You have said some are added by the client some by the news
service provider.

My point is that I am comparing my headers with someone who appears to use
the same news service as I do, yet there is less info in this persons
headers. Therefore I presume it must be my client. Therefore can someone
recommend software other than microsoft 'look-out!" that does this (IE GIVE
OUT LESS INFO IN THE HEADERS)? Thanks!

Go to http://www.tucows.com/ and look for a news client that you like
the look of. Google for Super Gravity, which lets you add your own
headers. Whichever client you use, it's unlikely that you'll be able to
drop NNTP-Posting-Host, X-Trace, and X-Newsreader.

Some of the usa servers have dropped the postinghost/xtrace stuff and
obviously store any relevant data elsewhere .

Check out Free Agent (www.forteinc.com).

Look at my headers first: I'm using Agent, which is the paid-for
version of Free Agent. Agent adds facilities like mail reading and
kill files to the Free Agent capabilities.

Why not find someone who has fewer headers and ask what newsreader they
use...?

Well as some of them post to this group perhaps they might say....I have a
feeling there is more to it that just a different client though. Not sure -
but I bet someone reading this knows...

X- stands for "experimental" which means they are not
part of the standard requirement for headers in NNTP
postings - which is why some have and some don't have
them.

Any decent newsreader will allow you to configure your
headers as required, adding or removing those you wish.

But then you're using Outlook Express...
