Hmmmmm. I just signed up for a teranews account and downloaded a
newsgroup list. It didn't contain any "alt" groups and no
city-specific groups.

Is this normal?? If so, I can see that I just wasted $4.

I count 16,872 groups that START with "alt." alone!
I suggest you reload the list. From Agent:
Click "Online", "Refresh Groups List...",
check the box, "Delete all extinct groups", click "OK"

You didn't waste your money. I find them one of the best.
